Deep Tissue Technique: Plantar Release

The extreme tenderness at the heel or back of the instep of the foot is commonly known as plantar fasciitis. It is important not to apply pressure to this area because it has the inflammation and possible micro tears, so it's contraindicated. Instead, we can loosen the fascial tissue above the area. Always go toward the tender area and not away, so that you aren't creating more tension on an area that is tearing. Be gentle and really soften the fibers of the tendinous area below the Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles.

On the aforementioned muscles you can go in either direction after you have loosened up the tendons to feel more pliable and flexible.

The "hot and cold" treatment is homework to the care recipient so that they can gauge a comfortable pressure to roll their foot on the iced water bottle (just 2 minutes) and heated stone 2 minutes and repeat maybe once. This process helps to create a vascular flush drawing blood to the area that is farthest from the heart to encourage the healing process. Remind your care recipient to go gently. Also: prolonged cold and heat can cause damage to the area so JUST 2 Minutes for each temp at a time. It's long enough, I assure you.
